40 marathons with a fridge on his back
A Newcastle man known as Tony ‘The Fridge’ Phoenix-Morrison has walked hundreds of miles with the 42.5kg kitchen appliance strapped to his back.
This week, Tony reached Leeds on his epic journey around the UK – he is running 40 marathons in 40 days, from John O'Groats to Land's End.
The 49-year-old is raising money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation for cancer research. It is not the first time he has completed a run with a fridge on his back – he gained notoriety for doing so at the Great North Run in 2011.
"I have never actually run two back-to-back marathons with a fridge let alone 40 – but my awareness and fundraising campaign is all about tackling what is thought to be impossible and making it to the other side,” he said.
“I have no doubt each day will be a fight for survival but I am ready for the challenge and fully accept the struggle and toil I am about to face.”
Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans and ex-England and Newcastle striker Alan Shearer have both championed Mr Phoenix-Morrison's campaigning in the past.
