Turn your old washing machine into an armchair
Have you ever wondered what hides under the shell of your washing machine?
Designer Tony Grigorian has unveiled how you can transform a knackered old appliance into an innovative piece of furniture.
Household appliances are supposed to make life easier, but become a hassle once they stop working. Disposing of such large appliances is inconvenient and can be harmful to the environment.
The Jerusalem-based industrial designer, also known as Antonina, has presented an alternative solution with her project I Used to be a Washing Machine. Along with a special YouTube video, she has released a step-by-step guide to building your own chairs.
“Every year some 60,000,000 washing machines are sold around the world, each is a kit of raw materials that serves as the heart of this project,” said Grigorian. “It is a globally accessible raw material – why not use it then?
“After disassembling the washing machine and mapping the parts, the creation process can begin. The process will be accompanied by an instruction manual that will guide you step by step to the creation of a series of chairs that can be incorporated in the domestic space.”
Grigorian's DIY instructions guide you towards building three items of recycled furniture – a ‘buddy’ armchair from the main body of the machine, a ‘dorry’ chair and a ‘dramms’ stool from the drum.
