A television commercial designed to promote the Women's EURO 2013 football competition has been shown the red card by defending champions Germany.
German public broadcaster ZDF has come under fire for airing a 22-second advert which shows a female footballer playing keepy-uppy with a dirty ball and then chipping it into a washing machine turned to a leather setting.
The advert was supposed to create publicity for the major sporting event being held in Sweden, but appears to have alienated members of the German team and fans in the country instead. According to a report by The Telegraph, people have taken to Twitter to slam the advert as "sexist and totally embarrassing".
German midfielder Fatmire Bajramaj confirmed that the advert had not been well received by the team.
"The advert was not a good idea," she said. "You'd like the advert to have something to do with women's football, not with a washing machine.
"They should change things for the next advert."
Germany are the defending champions and are attempting to win the competition for the sixth time in a row.
