Washing machines help with essential removal of pillow bugs

Experts have warned that pillows are ideal breeding grounds for some harmful bacteria, making it important to ensure they are thoroughly and frequently washed.

A study by The Barts and The London NHS Trust found that many different types of infection lurk within bed pillows, including staphylococcus and MRSA.

Principal clinical scientist Dr Arthur Tucker said: "People put a clean pillow case on and it looks and smells nice and fresh, but you are wrapping up something really nasty underneath."

Advice for killing bugs in your pillows includes washing them at 60 degrees celsius on a regular basis, or even putting them in the freezer for 24 hours.
