Panasonic launches Firefox-powered smart TVs
Japanese electronics manufacturer Panasonic has launched its first smart televisions to be powered by Mozilla's Firefox operating system.
The latest set of Panasonic Viera sets are now available in Europe and will be released elsewhere around the world over the coming months. Its developers claim that the Firefox OS is the first open mobile platform to be constructed entirely from web technologies.
"Through our partnership with Mozilla and the openness and flexibility of Firefox OS, we have been able to create a more user friendly and customizable TV [user interface]," said Masahiro Shinada, director of Panasonic Corporation's TV business division.
"This allows us to provide a better user experience for our consumers providing a differentiator in the smart TV market," he added.
Mozilla's Firefox OS is optimised for HTML5 and it is hoped that developers will be able to use the platform to create a plethora of innovative new apps.
