Unsafe appliances 'put thousands at risk'
Thousands of UK householders could be at risk of serious injury or even death as a result of faulty electrical appliances, it has been claimed.
According to a survey carried out by polling firm YouGov on behalf of the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (Amdea), barely a third of householders take the time to register all of their electrical appliances with their manufacturer.
Three-quarters of those who did register appliances said their main reason for doing so was to activate a guarantee, while nine per cent said they never registered electrical appliances.
The government is backing a new Amdea website which enables consumers to register appliances so that they can receive any information on product recalls or safety notices as quickly as possible.
"It is so important that we make sure that we register new appliances and don’t risk missing out on key information that could save lives," said consumer affairs minister Jo Swinson. "This initiative will make it easier for consumers to register appliances both new and old, and will help to ensure that relevant owners get vital information."
