A bright picture for many retailers was bolstered by the strength of the UK’s housing market, according to a survey from the British Retail Consortium and Google.
Home and garden product searches performed by either desktop or portable devices grew by 15 per cent between July and September.
The figures also show that people are increasingly seeking inspiration and details about goods they want to buy while out and about, the volume of searches via smartphones having grown by 41 per cent during the quarter, while a 22 per cent rise was also seen in searches carried out on tablet computers.
Helen Dickinson, BRC director general, commented: “It’s interesting to note [that] smaller items feature more significantly in the smartphone category while ‘beds’ top the list of searches across all devices.
“This suggests that consumers are becoming more and more comfortable searching for a wider variety of products on-the-go than has previously been the case,” she added.
