Would-be backers warm to portable fridge idea

A battery-powered portable fridge designed with people on camping trips in mind is the latest invention to capture the imagination of the watchers on crowdfunding website Kickstarter.

The Coolest Cooler, pictured left, is described by its inventors, from Portland, USA, as “a portable party disguised as a cooler”, and as well as its cooling compartment, has an ice crusher, cutting board and waterproof Bluetooth speaker built in.

The whole device is also mounted on wide tyres to help its portability, and comes in three colours, ‘coolest orange’, ‘margarita’ (bright green) and a shade of dark blue which the inventors have christened ‘blue moon’.

With two-and-a-half days to go at the time of writing, the project to bring the Coolest Cooler to market has attracted nearly 49,000 backers and, more importantly, its funding target of $50,000 (£30,170) has been beaten 20 times over.

With the funding in place, the team behind the Coolest Cooler plan to start production quickly, and are hoping that their first backers will get their devices some time next January.

As a result of the level of interest shown in their product from around the world, the developers also say they hope the device will conform to a range of international electrical supply standards.

It has a planned retail price of $299, or just over £180.
