A pair of budget own-brand supermarket dishwasher tablets matched a supposed premium brand in a series of tests carried out by consumer watchdog Which?
While Fairy's Platinum tablets scored the highest marks for factors such as quality of results and efficiency, they were run close by own-label products from budget supermarkets Aldi and Lidl.
And the testers found that these own-brand offerings cost as little as a quarter of the price of the Fairy brand per wash – at 10p, against 40p.
The budget brands which did the best job were Aldi Magnum All In One, and Lidl All In One, which scored 77 and 80 out of 100 respectively – good enough to earn both a 'Best Buy' accolade from the Which? researchers, and close behind the 84 scored by Fairy.
Another budget brand featured in the tests, from Morrisons, only managed a dismal 36 out of 100, despite running the Aldi and Lidl tablets close on cost per wash, at 12p.
A Which? spokesman said: "We calculate you could save over £100 a year by opting for one of these budget brands over the market-leading tablet."
